Why are my friends so unfriendly?

My suspicions about my friends and co-workers and my sense of isolation frequently agonize me and bring me down. It is like this:

A) Conversations often revolve around topics that I know nothing about and that everybody enjoys but me, leaving me feeling left out.

B) Their attitude towards me seems very cold these days, causing me to wonder if I've done something unpleasant to them.

C) I'm treated differently than other members of the group.

D) I think they go around with me reluctantly.

I don't have these same kinds of feelings toward my family, only with my friends and co-workers. In actual fact, they do go around with me normally and don't avoid contact with me in any obvious manner. Still, their general attitude stirs up my suspicions and weighs on my mind.

Please tell me how to relieve my distress.

There are only one of two possibilities here. Either your suspicions are correct and your friends and co-workers do have some problem with you that they won't discuss with you or you're imagining all this. There's no way that I can tell you which of these possibilities is true. Only you can determine that.

Is it possible that they are unaware that you know nothing about and do not enjoy many of the topics they choose to discuss? If it's important to you to be involved in these conversations, why not learn something more about the topics that interest your friends in order to keep up with them in conversation? You don't have to become an expert, since it's just chit-chat all you need to do is know enough about the subject to skim along on the surface of the conversation. You could go about this either by researching the topic on your own, or instead of contributing to the conversation you could ask pertinent questions that not only help you learn more about the topic but also keep the conversation going. You could also just look for a chance to change the subject to some topic that you find more interesting.

Have you done anything unpleasant that might have caused a change in attitude towards you? If you have, apologize and try to make up for it. If you haven't, there really isn't very much you can do.

You say that your friends' attitude towards you seems cold and that they treat you differently that the other members of your group. I'm assuming that this represents a change in their attitude towards you. If that's the case and you have done nothing to cause the change in their attitude, then all you can really do is either ignore it and hope for a change for the better or wait for some obvious incident or overt action that excludes you and confront them as to why you are being treated differently.

I realize that neither of these are particularly appealing options and neither is likely to bring you back to where your relationships were prior to this change in attitude. If they are treating you differently and they won't tell you why, chances are that they'll deny doing any such thing if you do confront them. At best they'll give you some vague reason that is unlikely to give you the satisfaction you crave. It seems to me that the best thing to do about this is nothing at all. At least that's what I would do if I were in your shoes.

Of course it is possible that they aren't treating you differently at all and you're simply imagining that such a change has occurred. Since they do still go around with you and don't try to avoid you, this could be the case. The only way you can determine that is by examining your own attitudes and more closely observing your friends behavior toward you and toward each other.

I think it's safe to say that most of us want to be liked, or at least we'd rather be liked than disliked. Unfortunately there is no way to be absolutely certain about how others perceive us. We all have a certain self-image. Some people work very hard to project a certain image of themselves to others, sometimes this public image is completely different from the way an individual may actually see him(or her)self. It is often the case, however, that other people see us in a completely different way than we see ourselves.

Whether you are just being yourself or trying to influence how others think of you, you really don't have much control over how others see you. It may be that you have character flaws of which you are oblivious. If so, perhaps you could learn something from your friends and become a better person. It's unlikely that they'll enlighten you though, so I wouldn't push the issue if I were you. It's also entirely possible that your "friends" are just a bunch of snobs who think themselves superior to you.

Perhaps you ought to take a closer look at your friends. If their behavior towards you is objectionable to you, maybe they aren't really friends at all. If they are behaving rudely and snobbishly towards you, you might be better off without them. If you believe in yourself and you aren't doing anything to cause your friends and co-workers to treat you differently then I think you should stop worrying about it. Either their attitudes will change or they won't. If you can't identify a cause for their behavior, than you can do nothing to bring about a change in their attitudes.

I realize that this may not bring you much comfort, but you may have outgrown this group of friends. It's perfectly natural for this to happen. A few friendships may last a lifetime, but most are temporary. I don't suggest you make a sudden break with your friends. Remain friendly, civil, and courteous with your friends and co-workers, but while you maintain your existing relationships it can't hurt to cast about for new friendships that are more to your liking.

If you can identify flaws in yourself work to change them, but if you are comfortable with yourself you really shouldn't allow yourself to be bothered by what others think of you. Whatever is beyond your control you must accept. If you have confidence in yourself, are true to yourself, and are of good cheer, you are sure to find the friends you deserve.
